Finally Skiing! ( Feature Poem)

Guest Writer!

Today's guest I have known, loved and admired all my life. I hold his poetry and short stories in high esteem. He employs all the elements and stylistic devices that professional writers use, and does so with ease and expertise!

He grew up in Ottawa, spending much of his youth in the Gatineau Hills. As a young man, he was an accomplished pilot and instructor for the RCAF, Squadron 429. Upon his return from World War 2, he went on to graduate from The University of Guelph, Year ’49, with a Bachelor in Agricultural Science degree.
I would love to see more creative work by this writer!

Please meet Mr. Douglas E. Williams, my mentor, and the best father on this earth! Dad, you top them all! Thanks for encouraging me to develop an emotionally bound sensitivity to the world around me, and the people in it.

The Skier

I climb no more
but rest on ski
upon the summit of the trail
that winds far down;
now I am free
to spread my wings
and swiftly sail
a fleeting figure through the snow
my destination – points below!
I start quite slowly, gather speed,
faster still, I do not heed
the danger of the turns, instead
a thousand thrills pass through my head
I stem a turn, my balance true
and catch my breath but I’m not through,
twisting, dipping, sometimes straight,
the trail leads down, then comes a gate,
and out across a field I glide,
slowing slightly, still I slide
until beside a hedge, I stop.

and gaze with wonder
at the top.

Sorry, meant to say the poem is great; and I love the photographs. I won't be counting these on my thousand comments. I came to pick up your URL to plug in my signature - Blogs I'm Recommending Today. Last time "today" lasted about a month. I hope it brings you some additional traffic.

Have a great day. I'm back off to try again to get some sleep.

Wow, nice poem!
I can see where you get your enthusiasm and ability to set goals.
He taught you how to attain dreams... I can tell....

Kilroy: Aw man! I was so close! Good one. Thanks for thinking of me, Kilroy! Am honoured.

Yes, this is my favourite poem of my dad's.

Lynn: Thanks. Yes, I usually have enthusiasm..not too sure about setting goals and attaining dreams, though! That's a tough one for me, actually...you know the limitations health issues sometimes have on all that. I'm a tad reticent, perhaps a learned or shaped response.

Bob: Yes, you're right. I am told this often. Lucky daughter!

Meno: That is an amazing feeling, especially when zipping down hills!

David: I can feel the thrill too and I'm a wimpy skier! He's a great role model!

Great poem! You can really feel the love of the sport in those words. Your dad does have a way with words!

Your dad's poem was wonderful - so wish there were a bit of snow here, instead of the gale that's going on out there! I love the way he leads you down the hill, not stopping at the end of the line, but swishing into the next one!

You and your dad have talent - maybe you should get together and do a book together :-) Hope you're going to republish some of your earlier poems soon... they shouldn't be hidden away!

Brooksba: Yes, you can feel his passion. Thanks, I'll pass on the compliment!

Annelisa: I love that too, how you follow him as if you're on the skis and then trace the path when you look back up the hill! It carries you right along and the rhythm matches the action perfectly.

Somehow, I can't get him to write more! His few poems are far better than mine!
I only have a few left to re-publish.

Steve: You can say that again!

Colleen: Thanks, I'll pass this on to him. I just think he's got such a natural feel for poetry and I wish he'd written more! He's basically untapped.

Wow, I followed the skier from top to bottom, felt the wind, the snow, the curves, the sound of sliding skies, the icy face, the legs fatigue and at last with trembling legs, a deep breath, thanks God, i'm living yet not dead.

Thanks for a great poem:-))

Toraa: Wow! Were you wearing skis when you read this?!! You do follow the action of the poem easily. This is my favourite poem of his. Thanks...I'll pass on this compliment to my dad.

Old Lady: Aw shucks! Gee thanks....I'll always think he's got the edge on me though..that kid to parent hero worship thing.

I had just spotted your last line, and I was going to add another comment, that your poems are as good as his!! I see Old Lady said it first :-)

Don't put yourself down, girl! You have your own style.

What do you mean that you've nearly finished republishing? Does that mean you have lots of new ones for us?? :-)

Annelisa: Yes, I really do think he is a bit better for having never studied much...he is a natural ..but you're right, we all do have our own style.

Not much new writing...some oldies just to mess with your mind!
